No No GMO!

What is a GMO exactly? Well, GMO stands for “Genetically Modified Organism.” To create a genetically modified organism, the genes of a plant or animal areliterally altered. In a laboratory, the genes of a completely unrelated organism are inserted into the genes of the plant or animal (i.e. like fish genes inserted into tomato genes… and yes this has been done).

Genetic engineering is quite different from traditional breeding. It is not like mating two different kinds of dogs. It is more like crossing a dog with a pig… which of course would not occur in nature. Genetic modification is far from an exact science and its true consequences have not been sufficiently studied. Yes, the FDA has approved these organisms and they are present in our food but, please keep in mind that the deputy commissioner for food at the FDA is Monsanto’s (the corporation that seems to be leading the way in biotechnology) former Vice President

Is that really food?

Buyer Beware! Before you spend your hard earned cash on packaged and processed foods, you should know that they provide little to no nutritional value and in many cases, they are harmful to your health.

Processed and packaged foods are one of the biggest nutritional health destroyers. Despite what many package labels claim, (i.e. Cocoa Puffs is good for you because it is filled with fiber or the blueberry muffin mix is healthy because it contains blueberries -which it usually doesn’t- or Nutella is amazingly nutritious for breakfast), you would be hard pressed to find packaged and processed foods in the grocery store that will actually provide nutritional benefits.

Most packaged foods have been processed so much that they need to be fortified with vitamins and minerals. In most cases, you can consider them dead foods (and foods that bring death … oops, did I say that?).

Now, I understand, fresh foods may not always be readily available and the supermarket is, in fact, filled with primarily processed and packaged foods, so what does one do?...........

Do vegetables really matter?

Most Americans today consume less than 3 servings of fruits and vegetables a day (and most of those servings are of fruit). With the convenience of processed foods and the fast-paced harried lives that we lead, it seems easier to opt for processed and packaged foods than it does to grab fruits and vegetables.

Fruits and vegetables are the key to good health and nutrition though. They contain the phytonutrients and the minerals that the body needs to sustain life. By simply adding in more vegetables, clients experience weight release, better energy, better bowels, lower pH, sleep better, relieve aches and pains, reduce allergy symptoms, lower blood sugar levels, reduce their risk of chronic illness, and more. The list could go on and on. Vegetables were put on the earth for us to consume......

Healthy Holiday Eating Tips

Alas, the holiday season has arrived. A time for festivities, shopping, family, <st1:personname w:st="on" style="color: #222222; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 16.6666679382324px;">joy… and for some, angst! There are 3 schools of thought when it comes to the holiday season and eating. The first school of thought believes that they should deprive themselves of all the holiday treats. They think of holiday gatherings and cringe. The visions of indulgence make them nervous and rightly so. They are likely committed to eating healthy but worry about their levels of will power. We will call them the Avoiders. The second school of thought also approaches holiday eating with concern. They however, have decided that they will indulge. They do so knowing that they may suffer some consequences in the end whether it is indigestion, weight gain, or increased susceptibility to colds...

Take Back Your Power -- Take Action

Last week we hosted a screening of Take Back Your Power at South Bay Wellness. The documentary was not only powerful and insightful but it reminded us of the many dangers of Smart Meters (also known as Automated Meters and Digital Meters). They are the meters that the Suffolk County Water Authority, PSEG (LIPA) and National Grid are currently installing all over Long Island at rapid rates. As outlined in detail in the movie, these meters are: Hazardous to our health. They emit high levels of EMFs that affect the human body as well as plants and animals. An invasion of privacy. Companies will know exactly what you are doing and when and will be storing this data. Likely to raise (not lower) your bills. They leave the electricity, gas and water systems vulnerable to cyber attacks. The companies do not need your permission to install these devices.     Many people believe that they have no say in the matter. This however, is simply not the case. The best thing you can do i ...

Beware of Fake Food

Buyer Beware! Before you spend your hard earned cash on packaged and processed foods, you should know that they provide little to no nutritional value and in many cases, they are harmful to your health.  Processed and packaged foods are one of the biggest nutritional health destroyers. Healthy Lunchbox Ideas

Back-to-school is right around the corner. Parents are out and about getting ready for the school year. One question most parents seem to have is: "What am I sending in for lunch and snack?" Many kids go to school with processed and packaged foods as snacks right along with deli meats and sandwiches. While manufacturers like to promote these as healthy options, there is not much that is healthy about them at all. Here are some tips for upgrading your child's lunch and snacks for better health:

  • Add in more veggies. Veggies are the healthiest things your kids can eat! Load their lunchboxes with them. Some favorites include: sliced peppers, cucumbers, jicama, and zucchini. Kids also love raw string beans, snap peas, snow peas, and cherry tomatoes. Add in a healthy dip like homemade guacamole or hummus.
  • Creative wraps. Instead of the same old bread sandwhiches, try wraps made with a large collard green leaf or a piece of nori paper. You can fill a wrap with...

Toxin Overload - Reduce your exposure and enhance your health.

Our health is impacted by what we put in, on, and around our bodies. We are very fortunate to have bodies that can heal themselves. However, when the body becomes too overwhelmed, it can reach the point where it needs to spend more time detoxifying than healing.  In this modern age of chemical everything, we are surrounded by toxins. Consider for a second the number of toxins you may be exposed to within just the first 30 minutes of your day: You are asleep in your room on a mattress and in a newly painted bedroom.  – Normal mattresses contain a myriad of toxic chemicals that give off gas and overwhelm the body. Normal paint will give off gas Volatile Organic Compounds that are hazardous to your health. The off-gassing can occur for years after the walls have been painted. Suggestions:  · Invest in a high quality air purifier. The ones you find at Home Depot or other such big box stores are usually not effective in absorbing VOCs. We recommend and sell Austin Air purifiers ...

Are your supplements helpful or harmful?

It would be WONDERFUL if we could get all of the nutrition we need directly from our food. Unfortunately, this is simply not the case. Why?

First, our farming practices have depleted the soil leaving our food with lower levels of nutrition. (Did you know that in order to get the same nutrition from a peach from the 1950s, you would need to eat 53 of today’s peaches?)

Listen to your body - it knows best!

Your body is the one thing that is with you all of the time. It tells you what it needs and it tells you when it is being adversely affected.  The question is: Are you listening?  Many of us seem to think of our bodies as separate entities rather than a real part of ourselves. It is almost as if we are all just mind. The disconnect between our body and our mind can sometimes have us miss many of the clues our bodies give us. So, make it a point right now to begin reconnecting your mind to your body. Become more conscious and more aware of your body. Take a few minutes, close your eyes, and feel every part of your body using your mind not your hands. Notice how each of your toes feel. Notice how each of your fingers feel. Notice each vertebra, each vein, each organ of your body, and even each part of your brain. Just take notice.  Notice the places that feel light and those that feel heavy. Notice the places that are in need of your help and notice the ones that are thankful for the help you ...
