About Melissa

Melissa is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with an insightful understanding and expertise in children’s social, emotional, and mental health. She has over ten years of experience working with children in various settings. Melissa began her journey in the field of Social Work as a Behavioral Specialist in the foster care system, helping children ages 3-18 process their traumatic experiences and use their insights to help make positive changes to their behaviors in the home and in school. She worked closely with children and teens who were considered Seriously Emotionally Disturbed, Learning Disabled or Medically Fragile. While completing her Master’s Degree in Social Work at Stony Brook University she worked in two internships including an Adult Psychiatric Unit and an Elementary School setting. Melissa has also spent several years working with children and their families in a clinic setting. In addition to her work with children, Melissa has treated women dealing with postpartum anxiety and depression.

Melissa strongly believes in utilizing a collaborative approach which promotes teamwork and skill building to aid in helping children to reach their full potential. Through continual research and life experience Melissa holds a vast amount of knowledge in working with children with emotional and behavioral dysregulation including social anxiety, phobias, obsessive compulsive disorder, mood disorder, adjustment disorders, oppositional defiant disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorder, grief counseling and learning disabilities. Melissa uses a strengths based approach with the families she works with.  Melissa helps families to build adaptive skills to help work through roadblocks that impede their child's emotional stability. Her work includes family sessions, individual sessions, group therapy, parent education, play therapy and behavioral interventions. Using an eclectic style of treating families, she draws from several theoretic approaches based on the client’s particular need.
