What Causes Autoimmune Disease?

If you do a search on the internet for the causes of various autoimmune diseases, you will find a lot of “unknowns.” While we understand that autoimmune diseases are a result of the body attacking itself, the cause of why that happens is still widely speculated and still considered mystery.

rain barrel

Danielle Zanzarov, PhD likes to explain illness in terms of a rain barrel. It is always filling up yet we don’t notice how full it is until it overflows. She explains that the rain barrel filling is the body’s exposure to stressors and toxins. Typically the body can manage these but as the body becomes overwhelmed or overloaded, it can no longer keep up with detoxficiation, healing and repair. As this happens the “rain barrel” begins to fill up until it gets to the point of overflowing, the point at which we begin to experience “symptoms.”  The way to bring the body back to balance is to begin to address the overload and empower the body to heal.

From a Functional Medicine perspective, everything in the body is inter-connected. A diagnosis is typically a label that is given to a collection of symptoms. That collection of symptoms however, has root causes. When we work clients, we seek to understand and try to identify the root causes of their issues so that their bodies can heal themselves and they gain relief from their symptoms.

Dr. Danielle Zanzarov, PhD has been working with clients with autoimmune issue for over 10 years and has seen time and time again how dietary, lifestyle and habit changes can transform a person’s symptoms and their life.
